Hi all,
while restoring a Stainley #4 I bought on ebay recently I noticed that the screws keeping the frog in place are missaligned. I’ve attached some pics with more details.
Could this be a problem? From what I can see the blade seems to be aligned correctly and shavings are nice and even.
Hello,
Your pics clearly show that it is a manufacturing problem. But no worry, I myself restored a couple of #4 planes. The most important thing is to set the frog at the same angle as the mouth opening and tighten the screws (not too tight). You can use a small square or any straight edge to align the frog to the mouth opening. Once you set the frog in place, make sure the plane blade is parallel to the mouth opening. If the frog screws do not allow room for setting the frog with mouth angle, then I hope somebody more knowledgable can help you. I hope I was helpful. Take care and enjoy planing.

That’s what counts.
The slots on the frog are usually wide enough to allow for a bit of adjustment from side to side. Otherwise they can be opened up with a file.
I don’t think that you have a problem.
