How do you prevent glue squeeze out from affecting finish?
In Paul’s videos, he just wipes the squeeze out away (smears it under his workbench to keep his old gum company which makes me chuckle every time). The easily accessible affected areas are planed, which takes care of the issue. But, what about harder to reach areas such as inside corners of boxes or casings? How do you prevent the glue squeeze out from affecting how the finish is absorbed into the wood and distorting the final outcome?
Thanks in advance for the help.
1 Paul has a rag held by a clip on the side of the bench
2 clean up the smears with a scraper.
Don’t go wiping or smearing glue blobs away in hard to get at places. Instead leave them dry for an hour or so then take a plane blade and slice the little boogers off. It removes the excess glue and leaves an uncontaminated wood surface. You can use any sharp tool such as a chisel but a plane blade works great.
If I am doing jewelry boxes, I use blue painters tape on all inside corners.
The other technique I use on larger projects is as soon as it is assembled and clamped, I use a sipping straw with the tip cut at a 45 angle. Run the straw over the glue line and the straw will capture about 90% of the squeeze out. Then I use a damp rag to “wash” off the rest. Never had a problem.
