I have a panel saw that my father gave me. When I use it the cut is extremely rough with a lot of tear out. Is this an indicator of sharpness? Or is it related to to points per inch (which 6 I think)? Or a bit of both?
Both. Its probably a rip saw. Since its 6tpi. It won’t cross cut. Watch the sharpening video and read his blogs. You will have it all figured out soon!
Yah what he said. You may also have bent teeth. Lay a scrap pc.of pine flat. Clamp it tight cut slow about 18″ or so watch as the saw moves this will show you where on the blade the teeth are bent or just out of order. Sharpen it and repete the cut. Then you can close up or reset the teeth .It is said most saws have to much set, Paul has a vid that shows you how to remove set.

Sounds like saw is a rip cut.
Like the above members have said probably need topping and re-sharpening.
After sharpening the set on saw become a little less. You still May have to reduce set can do this by Paul’s method or run a oil stone or diamond file/ plate on each side of saw.
Even though teeth quite large no reason why cannot be a cross cut saw. Handy for cross cutting bigger timbers.
As a Carpenter I use to use 6 tpi for rafters.
