Hi ,
maybe you could tell me where do you buy small hardware for box making (hinges, inlay wires etc etc.)
I dont have opportunity to make them myself .,and hardware stores are selling some really ugly and bad quality stuff. maybe You know where to find them online in Europe?29 April 2016 at 2:07 pm #136807We also buy bits from Screwfix (in the UK) and eBay. You can usually find some inexpensive brass hinges and screws. Sometimes you have to spend a little time polishing them out to get a nice shine to them, but it doesn’t take very long.
4 May 2016 at 9:28 pm #136988For inlay and stringing I use http://www.originalmarquetry.co.uk/page1.htm when not making my own. For box hardware I either use the Smart Hinge from Andrew Crawford http://smartboxmaker.com/ or Ian Hawthorne’s range http://www.jewelleryboxhardware.com/
I’ve only used the Neat Hinge once and I bought the older version as I was giving the box away. I did find there was a small amount of play in it, maybe 0.5mm but that can look a lot when you have inlay to line up. Perhaps his newer offering is better but I haven’t used it yet. I’ve used the Smart Hinge three times now and had very good results but he’s often out of stock although it looks like he’s almost on top of that problem now.
Personally I don’t like the Brusso range at all. The quadrant hinges are an absolute pain to fit and the butt hinges were really sloppy, very overpriced for what they are IMHO.
I’ve attached some pictures so you can see what they look like. The first is the Neat Hinge and the other two are the Smart Hinge.
I’m not associated with either maker, they’re just products I like.
I hope that’s of some help but if you need anything else just shout 🙂
Regards
Craig
