Hello everyone. I’m Frank Salinas (fleetfoot). I live in Silicon Valley (Sunnyvale) in California. I’m relatively new to woodworking though I have long been interested in and involved in handcrafts of various types. I’m a mechanical designer in the consumer electronics/industrial products area by profession.
I’m at the stage where I hope to retire from the work-a-day world sometime in the (I hope) not too distant future and devote myself to handcrafting and otherwise producing items for sale to supplement my meager retirement income.
I have read a lot of the forum posts and hope to be able to participate as time allows and also to share some of the things I’ve been up to.
Cheers all & Best Regards,
fleetfoot
5 January 2013 at 3:14 pm #6164Welcome Fleetfoot!
I have been doing woodworking almost all my life. My goal this year is to become a better woodworker and less of a tool collector!
Anonymous5 January 2013 at 10:16 pm #6170Welcome to the gang Fleetfoot. You’ve come to the right place to get started. Interesting nickname, care to share how you got that? Grizzly bear attack, jilted female, anything interesting like that? 😉

8 January 2013 at 5:58 am #6246Hi Jeff,
When I was much younger I used to play some touch football. Somehow I was much faster than most, so my buddies called me “fleetfoot”. No big deal. My real name is Frank.
Anonymous8 January 2013 at 6:10 am #6248That’s pretty cool Frank. My football coach used to refer to me as “a gutless wonder”. Doesn’t quite have the same smooth ring as Fleetfoot. LOL.

8 January 2013 at 6:58 am #6254LOL – I can sympathize completely – that’s why I was fleetfoot – just to get away from the pounding that would otherwise ensue.
No shame. I’m sure you gave it your best.
I’d like to see some of your woodwork?
Cheers fleetfoot
8 January 2013 at 7:10 am #6255Hey Stephen,
I have not had time to be a tool collector but I know what you mean. I have tried to buy tools I wanted to use on eBay and found I was competing against people who are just collectors and have automated software to gather all the valuable tools and pump up the prices. They don’t use the tools and never will. They are just traders trying to capitalize on demand.
So be it. I don’t blame someone for trying to make a living. I just keep on looking to see how what I have now can help me create what I want to create. It’s simple really. Your mind can tell you all you really need to know.
Cheers

11 January 2013 at 3:17 pm #6399Hi Frank,
Keep at it with ebay. Sometimes you run into a bidding war on something, but for user-grade tools you probably won’t run into a lot of collectors and there are loads of tools that cycle through there. You can pick up the essentials for cheap, especially if you’re willing to do some cleaning and restoration.
I picked up this plane for about $15 on ebay, and spent a day or so fixing it up, I use it all the time now.
I’m in the Santa Cruz area, if you need a hand I’d be happy to help.
