Hi,
I inherit one broken (in the front) and no fence Stanley 78 some time ago.
Cleaned and sharpened that little thing is always ready to work! So, if I understood You need to extract the “remains” of the screw.
Idea nº 1 try to make a little groove (file or hacksaw) and then use a flat screwdriver to remove it.
Idea nº 2 Drill a small hole (size of a screwdriver or a old hex key) and then try to rotate it out.
NOTE Use oil – like WD-40 or something like it, to loosen up a bit the remaining screw thread.
If everything goes south… well…You can always blame me or
You can by a new Stanley fence kit around $14 or 15 €António
So I got the remains of the screw out, it broke off flush so I ended up having to pay a fellow to tap it out.
now I need to replace it. Its the screw on the fence… does anyone know the size of this screw?
I’d also like to replace the screw on the depth stop.
I think it’s 10/28?
thanks7 November 2014 at 5:27 pm #120703I’d be tempted to ask the person that tapped it out what size tap he used, just in case he used a tap with a different thread to the original screw.
Stanley only used proprietary thread on their tools so you would need to get the screw from an other Stanley plane. Check ebay sometimes there are some spare parts for sale. You can also check with tool collectors for parts as they usually have some extra (Patrick Leach at http://www.supertool.com/ is one place), some woodworking forums has a has a trade section were you can put up a request. Retapp is an alternative but would ruin the resell value, but it might now matter to get it back to be a useful tool.
There are several companies on eBay that sell parts for Stanley planes and the parts for the Stanley 78 are quite common. Here is a link for one that I’ve done business with several times, New Hampshire Plane Parts:
