On a recommendation from someone on this forum, I ordered these chisels
It took a little over a week to get them, but I blame UPS for that. They seem to have problems finding our new house. Many packages have been returned to sender when they should have been delivered.
My first impression with them is that they are light. The only other chisels I have used is a set of 4 original Marples Blue Chips. Compared to those, these are quite a bit lighter. They do seem strong enough for the occasional mortise. Some people I talk to think it crazy to use a bevel edge chisel for that, but I don’t have a set of mortising chisels, so I make do.
I started to flatten the back of the 1 inch chisel yesterday. What I typically do is buy some wet dry paper and use my diamond stone as the flat surface. Spraying some water on the stone helps hold the paper down, and this way I know I have a flat surface and I won’t be wearing out my stone doing it. I was a bit dissapointed to see it had a very slight belly to it. I did manage to get it flat in about 15 minute though. It sharpened up real nice.
The only problem was that the quarter inch chisel I got wasn’t the bevel edge, but a straight edge. I called them up and they sent out a replacement the same day. He even told me to just keep the straight edge one. I guess I do have a dedicated “mortising” chisel now 🙂

1 September 2015 at 4:35 pm #129999They do look nice, and the price is a nice middle ground between the el cheapo big box store chisels, and the $50 a piece fancy pants ones. Can you speak to the fineness of the beveled edge? That is to say, the non-cutting edges that are 90 degrees to the face, how much of that is square before it bevels away? On the el cheapo ones I have, it is far too thick, maybe 2.5-3mm, increasing to a lot more to the back. It can become a real problem when trying to get into tight spaces or pare dovetails and the like.
1 September 2015 at 5:02 pm #130002I didn’t measure it, but I don’t think it would be more than 2 mil at most, and ground the same all the way back. I will check when I get home.
1 September 2015 at 11:57 pm #130006They all have slight variations. The 1″ is 2.5mm thick. It does slightly taper, but it only went to 2.8. The 3/8″ was 1.4mm at the cutting edge and 1.6mm at the tang
