Hi guys!
I just bought a second hand Stanley 4 1/2 plane, and I followed Paul Sellers youtube video for restoring it.
When I was flattening the flat face of it (the one opposite of the face with the bevel), I noticed that it had a slight belly in the middle, just like Paul’s cutting iron in the video.
So, I followed his method for flattening more quickly and delivered some hammer blows with the hard nylon face hammer.
I didn’t do much.
So, I delivered another couple of hammer blows, but this time with the steel face hammer, just like Paul mentioned that we could do it, if the nylon face hammer didn’t work.
And then the unimaginable happen (see photos)!
I never this could happen!
Has this ever happened to anyone?
Hi Antonio,
I saw your comment and asked Paul. He replied:
Yes, I am afraid this can happen, depending on whether the cutting iron was tempered sufficiently well. In this case it obviously wasn’t. Unfortunately, the only way to find out is hitting it with a hammer.
