I’ve been building a short (117cm) workbench over the past few weeks following Paul’s design. I’m now at the point of fitting the vice (a 9″ quick release Axminster vice, which seems very solid).
On the bottom plate there are four holes for screwing to the underside of the bench. However the two closest to the inner face will probably not clear the apron if it is fitted flush with the apron. Paul’s blog seems to suggest he uses two coach screws under the vice and then two through the inner face of the vice.
Have I understood that correctly?
Thanks for any advice,
Nick
Hi Nick,
I had a similar question and it does seem that the technique shown in the video relies on two screws through the back face and then 2 lags/coach screws through the back holes and into the bottom of the bench top.
I will be installing my vise in a week or so and my current plan (subject to change) is:
1. I have a 3 inch bench top so I can add a 3/4 inch shim btw the vise and the bottom of the bench top, this will put the jaws approx. 1/4 below the top.
2. prior to fitting the vise I will use carriage bolts to fasten the front of the vice to the shim.
3. Once I place the vise and shim I will use 4 lags/coach screws to attach the vise from the bottom; 2 through the back hole of the vise and shim, and 2 through just the shim as close as I can get to the front (apron). This is in addition to the 2 screws that go through the vise face.As I mentioned this is the plan if it actually works remains to be seen.

16 January 2015 at 7:09 pm #123586I have added a few photos that may helpThe first photo shows the recess in the top to allow the vice to sit far enough in so the 4 bolts can screw in to the underside of the top, the second photo shows the vice sat on a spacer piece bolted to the underside of the bench top., I found this was an easier way than trying to fit the vice once the top was fitted
Third one shows vice fitted with wooden jawsAttachments:

Eventually I mounted it on the surface of the apron rather than recessed.
On the underside I used two large coach screws through the holes I could get to, and then added two clamps behind the apron made from some scrap oak, which are also held fast with coach screws.
I’ve then screwed through the inner jaw liner and into the bench top to completely secure it.
I’ve attached a view of the underside for reference.
