Does anybody know if it would be possible to saw the toothed section off of a hardpoint saw to form a new edge and then re-cut and re-sharpen the new edge on the remaining saw plate? As far as I know its only the teeth that are hardened but the plate is standard steel. I don’t like the idea of throwing a blunt hardpoint away to buy another one.
17 October 2023 at 12:22 am #816392Thanks for your help, but I’m not talking about trying to sharpen the hardpoint teeth, what I meant was to cut along the full length of the saw plate maybe 10mm above the original teeth to get a new clean edge on the plate, then cut in completely new teeth as shown in one of Paul’s videos (but cutting off the original teeth rather than flattening them with a file).
As far as I can see the hardening process (induction hardening?) is a localised process which only affects the teeth, but the saw plate is, I believe, not hardened?
I just wondered if anyone had tried that at all – I know I could buy a new saw for about £5 to £10 but I strive to minimise landfill waste and even if the steel is recyclable I would rather re-use before recycling if at all practicable.Inductive hardening usually is a local process.
The area within ~1/8″ of the teeth will probably be harder than the rest of the plate, but likely softer than a saw file.
Paul has a video out there on Youtube showing how to reestablish new teeth. If I were going to do this, I would used a grinder or belt sander to remove the teeth, then a mill file to joint the edge straight

18 October 2023 at 5:57 pm #816554Thanks again, you pretty much said what I had concluded but really just needed some reassurance that it might work.
I had already tried the saw file on the end of the blade about 6mm (1/4″) up from the bottom and it does cut the steel and I do intend to follow Paul’s video on re-cutting and re-sharpening.
For cutting the teeth off the blade I was going to try a circular saw with a straight edge and everything clamped down securely – my circular saw blade cuts steel pretty cleanly and then if I need to I can refine it with a flat file?
Thanks again. -
