Brian a very professional job I really like the very clear pale timber
It would be a shame to paint it IMHOWigan, Lancs. England :
21 January 2014 at 8:33 pm #26336Fantastic work Brian. If like the idea a green milk paint but don’t want to cover up the grain you could mix the milk paint very thin and use it like a stain. I did it on my drop leaf table, see the gallery, and it worked out quite well. The grain comes through and the tone is even. After the milk paint seal the whole thing with shellac.

22 January 2014 at 4:20 pm #26386Yeah, I think I will decide between shellac and danish oil when I shellac the inside. If things are going well with shellac, I will probably just continue on to the outside.
Martin, good point about painting it later. Definitely going to go the “all natural” for now.
Greg, the milk paint “stain” idea is very cool. Great looking table! I may try that on another project.
Sandy, cutting the chest apart was a bit nerve racking but once you get going you will realize it isn’t too difficult. Take your time and watch your lines and you will be fine. Keep the saw perpendicular or you may be OK on the outside lines but off on the inside.
Any one have a brass chain snap on you? Mine hasn’t but that thing is tighter than a guitar string when opened up! hahahaha…
Brian-
Fine work on the chest.
I was just reading some blog entry comments from Brownell, who wrote that Jeff Miller warned him to NOT use Danish Oil (WATCO) on the inside of his chest, because it would have a rancid odor for quite some time.
To me, Shellac seems like a no-brainer.

22 January 2014 at 5:39 pm #26391Hey Scott. I am definitely using shellac on the inside. The danish oil would be outside surfaces only.
2 March 2014 at 8:05 pm #28517Been a while! I was not going to post until it was complete but with the weather getting cold again, it may be a while.
So I made some PS style handles.
and then wedged and glued them to the drawers. Here is the completed chest except for a final cleaning and shellac.
So close!!! One of my kids decided he wanted to build a box so I took a detour to help him with that. Was ready to get back to it this weekend but the weather dropped from 80degC to 20degC! Texas style…. Maybe next weekend I can get it cleaned up and start shellacing.
2 March 2014 at 10:22 pm #28524That chest looks really good well done Brian 😉

21 March 2014 at 11:48 pm #30907All done! Put 4 coats of clear shellac and then waxed with 0000 steel wool. Here it is.
Now I have to find a place to put it and fill it up!
22 March 2014 at 3:35 am #31195Excellent Job Brian, definitely something to be proud of.
