In the UK at least, Aldi are offering a lathe this week. It comes with three woodturning chisels and is £89.
It got me thinking. It’s not going to be a great lathe, sure, but I’m a newbie to lathes, can cheap ones be reinforced and turned into usable machines?
Presumably this would be fine as it stands for stuff like tool handles.
Hi John
Although I don’t have the room or the desire to own a wood turning lathe I will have a look in our Aldi tomorrow to see what it looks like, If you are looking for a lathe you cannot go far wrong at £89 and it does have a three year warrantee. Let us know how you go on.
While I’m sorely tempted, I’m not sure I’ll purchase it. The timing is terrible for me, as I’ve just made my first woodworking equipment purchase since discovering Paul’s work – A bandsaw, of course – but setting that up and learning how to make it sing is bound to take more time than I have. A lathe project may be beyond me this year.
That said, Aldi have a habit of stocking the same product at a similar time every year, so there’s always next year…
I checked them out at our local shop, they had about 6 in stock , could not see what they looked like as they were all boxed up , but if weight is anything to go on the box was extremely heavy
