I do not speak or read japanese but my understanding is that this is a competition held by the labor union in Japan. No benches and very small work area. Hand tools only.

It’s impressing how cultural tradition influences the human body. No matter where you go, across Asia you see men and women above 80 years old cowering ( I don’t know if this is the right term – sitting on their heels, knees completely bent) at bus stations or other places in a body position that most people of the western world at half the age could not stay longer than 5 minutes without pain.
There are also nice videos on youtube showing japanese carpenters at work. Unfortunately it’s only a few.
28 February 2013 at 4:08 pm #8669Gregory thanks for sharing the video, I like watching the Japanese people work but no shoes, and kneeling like that would kill my back. I worked for a large Japanese Architectural Aluminum Manufacturer and extruder before I retired 3 years ago and they are very meticulous and proud of what they produce.
