Lifetime “Wood Machinist”, age 72. I’ve built several sets of kitchen cabinets, a few pieces of furniture, and totally remodeled a couple of houses. Got pretty burned out on machining wood.
I’ve always been interested in “hand woodworking”, but never did physically make the transition. I bought several of James Krenov’s books back in the early 80’s and subscribed to “Fine Woodworking” for several years. Even though I’ve got a pretty complete “Wood Machining” shop, I’ve never (until recently) gathered up much in the way of GOOD hand tools. Like so many, I drank the “New Yankee Workshop” kool-aid and subscribed to “Woodsmith” magazine.
This fall I was looking around on-line and discovered Paul’s “Woodworking Master Class” website. Turned out to be just the spark I needed to scratch the “Hand Woodworking” itch! I’ve been having a great time gathering up (ok buying) some nice new hand tools and trying them out. Great fun! At my age, with several past shoulder injuries and a recently ruptured right bicep, I’ll be letting my apprentices (aka machines) do the heavy lifting for stock prep and will take over with hand tools from there.
Anyway, I’ll use this thread to document my journey into hand (more or less) woodworking and as a platform to ask questions……….. of which I’m sure I’ll have many.

4 January 2019 at 9:25 pm #554256Got my mortises finished today. Everything went just as it’s supposed to.
I’d never even heard of a “knife wall” until recently. Works great! Also the concept of using the parts themselves to do the layout is new to me. Makes total sense for hand woodworking. Coming from a machines background, I still keep wanting to measure everything.
Let’s see how my first attempt at posting a picture goes.

It is a great way of de-stressing, and just enjoying the nature of the wood and the work. I hope your recent injuries get sorted out Jim, and thanks for sharing your pics of the wall shelf so far, looking good.
Kind regards,

Jim,
I do very much love the freedom from the tape. I’ve always been frustrated with the not quite exact enough results of machine working. Measuring from piece to piece with a knife makes perfect.
