Hello. David from OR, USA here. I’ve been lurking for a bit whilst getting caught up on all of the videos. I don’t usually post to forums, but I did want to beam in to say hello and to comment on Paul’s sharpening method. Very simply put: it’s changed my life. My tools have never been sharper and I’ve never spent so little time getting them that way.
It was a bit of a challenge getting used to the method and I skewed, unintentionally of course, quite a few blades until I learned to ease up, change my hand position and, most importantly for me, changed the angle of the stones themselves. So instead of addressing them head on with the stones perpendicular to me, I canted them 30 degrees to the left. This made the process more comfortable (perhaps I have too much “muscle” in the middle as Paul always jokes about) and I’ve eliminated the unintentional skewing. I do stop after every stone and check for square, but I think that’s just some lingering paranoia that will soon leave me.
I no longer have to dread getting into my shop to sharpen up and prepare for work; it’s now just a few minutes worth of pleasurable activity followed by the really fun stuff: making shavings.
Regards,
