Tagged: Fixing flaws
I have a prized board with flaws that I am wondering if I can repair to use for the top of the sofa table. My board is 14″ wide X 50″ long and has 2 live edges–so I could make a narrower table. I have no more Myrtle and thought that I could could use a different wood for the rest of the sofa table. Here’s the flaw. I have a fine check at one end right down the middle of the board. I have had this piece stored indoors for 10 years and the check has stayed the same during the entire time. Does any one have an idea how I could Fill the small crack? Has any one built furniture from mixed woods?
Thank you in advance.

I like to fill cracks with epoxy, been working very slowly on a very large cabinet and all of the raised panels feature extensive checks and cracks. Strangely enough this is a mixed wood project. I see no problems involved because of it. Is myrtle local to the coast? You should post a picture!! I’m going to have a mill soon and seems the only economical way to source logs is to run out and get em.
Another way to deal with the crack is to span it with a butterfly. This will lock the crack from growing any bigger and adds a nice accent when using a different species.
