I made the wall bracket, this one is just a test/training piece made from reclaimed meranti.
I hope to make a pair after this one, it’s currently unfinished until I get the right brass screws which will arrive over the next few days, then I will glue it up, plane it flush, sand and finish it, let me know what you think, I’ve attached some pics.
regards, Ben.

Are these from the same dimensions of stock as Paul used? Looks visually a little slimmer than I remember his being – though it’s a while since I watched those episodes.
I have some mreclaimed meranti from some window frames and was wondering about doung the same. Was it ok to work with? Splintery?
Do post up another pic when you get it finished!

hi, you have eagle eyes! that’s right I made the back post a little bit thinner/less deep, because I had to use the stock I had available, however it doesn’t make much difference to the strength.
As for working with meranti, it can be quite brittle near the edges I’ve found, you have to watch sharp corners carefully or they can break off, other than that it’s nice wood to work. I’ll be posting more pics by the end of this week.
here’s the finished bracket, it took me over 7 days to finish it, I used le tonkinois marine no1 varnish, the problem was not being able to varish it all in one go, here it is 3 layers later. I’m very pleased with how it’s turned out!

I made some Meranti winding sticks after seeing your bracket. As you say about edges, the arris fractured on its own in a few places but no drama after a couple of swipes of the #4.
I was happy with the finish I got from 3 coats of Shellac and some beeswax – made a cup of tea between coats and got the finishing done in an evening. Admittedly I was somewhat cavalier about handling the already-coated bits, justified given it’s a workshop tool.
Haven’t come across that varnish, I’ll look it up in due course.
