I was given a #4 smoother and I would like to convert it to a scrub plane, but I do not have a bench grinder to re-shape the iron. I tried a hacksaw, a file, and emory paper, but I feel like that is going to take me a week to make any progress. Does anyone have any other ideas? Or would someone be willing to do the shaping of the iron for me and send it over? I would gladly pay you for it.
The best I can suggest is to use a file on it. Scribe the radius using a fine sharpie and get hold of a mill bastard file, the ones that Paul shows in his saw sharpening video. It’ll take some doing but the mill file should get the iron shaped relatively easily. If you have someone grind it they have to pay attention to heat build up and losing the temper in the iron.
6 November 2014 at 5:22 am #120646I did this to a No. 5 last year and it worked great. It was unexpectedly fast to file down the profile using a mill bastard file. I used an 8″ radius for mine. Sharpening was interesting – I kind of just winged it on the diamond stones. But the scrub doesn’t have to be keenly sharp like other planes.
6 November 2014 at 5:52 am #120648I have been trying a bastard cut mill file, but it isn’t really doing the trick. I just watched Paul’s video again and he mentions that a file won’t really work. I’ll keep at it. Maybe some 60grit paper on a stick?
