Hi All,
I picked up an old bench on ebay. It’s very study (Beech, I think) but the top is absolutely littered with drill holes, chisel hits, and power router stripes. It’s functional but it’s not pretty! 🙂
I’m wondering how to fix it up, or if this is even necessary.
Is it possible to overlay a new bench top onto the existing one? If so how would I join these together and would I need to worry about matching the wood so it doesn’t warp? Or am I better living with it how it is?
Any advice received with thanks
RWIt doesn’t need to look pretty, but it helps if it’s reasonably flat. This might help in that regard, assuming it’s solid wood.

Some before and after pictures would be interesting!
What’s more important is that the top is flat and twist free. After that, assess whether the dings n dents would interfere with your woodworking. If you decide to “fix” it then I’d almost contemplate using some 3/4 on baltic birch plywood attached to the existing top. I say attached not glued. You could also use glue up a panel out of real wood and attach it.

Thanks for the responses.
@mkng1: thanks but my bench is nowhere near that flat!! Please See pic I have included.
@dave: when you say attached, I presume you mean screwed from beneath, rather than glued in any way, or screwed from above?Attachments:
