Hi,
I have spent the last few months working with pine and now wish to start looking at making a few pieces using hardwoods but there is a limited amount of suppliers on the Isle of Wight.
Have just been to my local Timber yard and it’s slim pickings but they do have something called ‘Meranti’ that looks quite nice?
Does anybody know much about this wood or have worked with it?
Any help would be good as I would head back there before the end of the day so I could get some ready for layout at the weekend 🙂
THANKSSS
Martyn Chick
It is not a bad looking wood, I would give it a try. I have used Lauan Plywood on a couple of occasions, and that worked out fine. Let us know how it works out for you.

Meranti is a Light pink/red bland sort of of timber not very dense, very light, and marks very easily. Similar to Balsa wood probably a little denser but not much.
Utile is much more dense very similar to Sapele Mahogany type woods.
I used some Meranti on the bottom of my box.
