Ooh please do not place me in the same league as Paul I too have much to learn from him.
Hi Salko, took me a while to get round to this. As I said, just hollows and rounds; the hollows are more subtly skewed than the rounds, which are very noticeably skewed.
The one on the left is a Marples rebate plane, nothing unusual there. The hollows are Atkin and sons Sheffield, no makers’ name I can find on the rounds. I have one more round that fits between those two and is skewed similarly, also no name.
I’ve never heard of Cambria before, is it an Australian hardwood?
Matt
Interesting I have never seen skewed h and r’s before. I thibk it is a great idea for end grain work.
Cambria is a marketing term for white ash whicb is what tbis timber is. They place white ash In an oven and bake it to extreme temperatures to make it turn black. The idea is its supposed to make it dimensionally stable to resist cupping and warping. To some degree there is some truth to it but not a lot. Still I like it even though it is very fragile to work with and will shatter if dropped. This will only occur with thin pieces, the end grain is also fragile so you have to be careful when shooting. However it takes a very nice finish and looks elegant. Unfortunately due to its bigh price there’s not much call for it but as soon as I run out I will uby some more if I can find someo more.
Typing this on my phone was almost impossible, im astonished when I see my kids text with lightning speed. I just dont know how they do it.
