To make slotted beams. For a mortise gauge
Start with a 3 to 4 inc. board about 12 long this gives you room for clamping it down, make a knife wall 5/16 in along the long side then a second one again about 5/16 over now use a plow plane or router to clean the slot out to about 1/4 or so make the slot as flat and square as you can. Cut a piece of wood to fit in the slot make it tight but just able to slide in the slot. Cut off a small piece 3/4 to 1 inc. Glue it in the end of the slot. Drill small holes for the pins. To get pins buy a pack of 18G.. stainless steel brads at HD about 2 dollars. Cut the slotted section off, and plane or sand it to shape. Now make the other parts to fit.
I know there are other ways to make this but this is how I have managed to do it and have it come out as a working tool. The sizes are not fixed use what ever you think will work for you.
