I have had limited success with Paul’s guide block method of cutting mortises when the work is held in my vise. The hammer blows invariably cause the work to slip. I think my vise racks a little bit and isn’t as strong as Paul’s. So, I’ve started clamping the work and guide block to a supporting board mounted in the vise, as shown in the photo. This lets me do the mortising on the benchtop, which counters the hammer blows very nicely. I’m using a Lie Nielsen 5/16” mortising chisel I picked up on eBay. It’s parallel sides forces you to align the chisel properly. Also, it’s much stronger than my bench chisel and I find a can use a lot more force when levering out the waste. Anyone else encountered similar problems?

Put some shelf liner or leather on the onside of the jawa. That will help a lot.
That’s a good idea. I’ve had similar problems with pieces slipping. I put an oak 2×4 under my piece while chopping. The scrap sets on the rails of the vise and so there’s no room for anything to slide. Its all bottomed out. I like your idea though. Cool. Good job. Kevin
