Here’s my new marking knife, custom made by my brother who’s a knifesmith. The blade is from my thickness planer and I got the quilted maple from the side of trash dumpster, of all places. Who would throw away an 8 foot piece of quilted maple?

27 November 2015 at 5:45 pm #132740I recently made my own using a 6mm spade bit. Pleased with it so far.
29 November 2015 at 7:03 pm #132759Jeez, that’s some size marking knife George. If it were mine I think I’d call it a machete. Good use for a thickness planer though George. Noisy, dusty things that they are. God only knows what Keith’s looks like.
30 November 2015 at 3:50 pm #132764I prefer tools to work, not look pretty. Until I made this marking knife I used a similar stanley knife to Paul. It is at least 40 years old. However, I prefer the one I made feels better in the hand (perhaps its the wooden handle) and leaves a clearer mark. Possibly because one side is flat and polished and the other has 2 bevels forming a point. But feel free to find out what a spade bit looks like, nothing to do with a garden spade. To help you see:

Good looking knife George. How do you find the length?
Speaking of machetes… I made this hedge trimmer out of a blunt saw in the summer. It’s a little too flexible but the hedges don’t put up much of a fight.

Scott – LOL 😀
Chem – I got the length by holding the unfinished blade in my hand, one end in the palm where it rests, and the other just slightly past my index fingertip. Actually, I was hoping for a little thicker handle, but it fits quite nicely and leaves a good mark.
Love your machete! With that kukri-esque blade, I bet the bushes do fear that thing! 🙂
1 December 2015 at 3:44 pm #132798Loads of examples here – where I got the inspiration from. I was a bit concerned that some examples put a point on the other end as a scratch awl. Seems a bit to easy to stab yourself with the point whilst holding it. Mine is the spear point type.
Nearly forgot the link:
