A couple of years ago, I bought a new “Made in England” Stanley Plane Iron for my Stanley 4-1/2. It works great! I ordered directly from U.K.as it was less expensive than other replacement blades I was able to find here in the U.S.
I was so happy with this iron that I recently ordered another for my No.7 plane. It was another “Made in England” iron and cap iron set. The iron itself looks OK, except the Stanley logo was double stamped. I just got around to getting it ready to use today. The iron was nearly flat and easily sharpened. I polished the cap iron a little and fitted to the blade. Imagine my surprise when I installed the assembled iron and cap iron and found that it could not be retracted into the plane body. On further inspection, I discovered that the adjustment hole is 100mm from the blade end. All of my other Stanley cap irons are 95mm from the blade end!
I was wondering if anyone else has noticed a decline in quality of new Stanley irons/cap irons?
Attached picture shows new on left and old U.S. iron on right. No, your vision is not blurred. That is the name stamp on the new iron.
