I took Greg Merritt’s advise and replaced my old vise plate, made out of pine, for a new one of 2″ hard maple. The new one is rock solid and no flex, grips like a… well, vise.
I made the holes for the guide rods and screw as tight as possible, but the hole around the screw was a bit too snug and it wasn’t turning smoothly, so I took it out and sanded the inside of the hole with a little drum sander attachment for the drill press. Now it is turning perfectly.
The piece of wood I got was stamped “8/4 H Maple” and while I was preparing the piece I decided I wanted to preserve that stamp for the top edge of the vise. I know there isn’t any need for aesthetics in a shop appliance, but I really like the way it turned out and it gives my bench a little personality. The vise plate is finished with Danish oil and shellac.
Thanks for looking.
Looks really good Jay. Glad you got it sorted out. Aesthetics are important for our workspaces. We should always strive to make our surroundings enjoyable and add a part of our personality as well.
