If you are not interested in workbenches, read no further. Recently, after getting over-enthusiastic with the mallet and chisel chopping a quick dovetail, I ended up (because of bad positioning of said work piece) significantly damaging my workbench, to the point that the area I used most was now basically useless.
So I built a quick and dirty workbench over the weekend using standard off the shelf 5 by 30 centimeter big box planks and some scrap pallet wood.
I have always had my vise on the end of the bench (I have a small workshop, and my tools are wall mounted on both sides, so I have always been working around the two sides and one end) and continued this, even though the wider vise faces meant that some re-enforcement was needed. I incorporated a planing stop as well and I have found that the two slots allow me to clamp in a myriad of ways that were never possible with a full top work bench. Last night I set up for some edge work, using a dovetailed L shape piece (a useful little work holding fixture), cinched in the vise as a crochet, and some battening clamped to the apron to support the work piece edge. Worked surprisingly well all things considered. Even managed to use that set up for cutting tenon cheeks.
This basically means that my new bench (still not acclimated or perfectly flat, and definitely not finished yet) still manages to be stable, large, and hold work so that I can work large faces, small faces and end faces, as well as being clamp friendly (and as a bonus, due to the slots, a lot of the mess falls down the slots to the area under the workbench where I want it to go, rather than under my feet, so cleaning up is also quicker).
Anyway, some pictures for those who may be interested.Attachments:
