I’ve done four as well now – the fourth one went much quicker – 30 mins rather than an hour. Also, it’s a lot cleaner than the first few I did π

1.5 hours for the first, about the same for the second. 45 minutes for the third and about 30 minutes for the fourth.

I see a pattern developing here! With each mortise we become quicker and the holes more refined…
10 May 2018 at 9:25 pm #542812Have run into a snag, and I fear a typical novice mistake. I’m filling the cracks with left over chisel debris, glue holding some of that in. I’m also using wood filler to close up the remaining spaces and then sand it all smooth. I knew going in to this project that it was not going to be perfect, and I am learning from my mistakes as I work.

17 May 2018 at 11:55 pm #547927That is correct. I was thinking about pulling it apart, shaving down the tenon and reseating it, adding glue and clamping it shut. That probably would have been the better thing to do. However, after filling the cracks with putty, then sanding and squaring it all up, I decided not to. The bearers are in place now, and I am days away from mating the frames to the benchtop. All in all, I am satisfied. This is the first attempt at making anything and won’t be the last. I’ve learned from this mistake and I am moving on!
18 May 2018 at 9:57 pm #547946It isn’t pretty, but it’s done! I used MDF for the skirts, and I did not make a slot for the well-board to slide into. I made a modification by dropping the rear skirt even with the frame and adding a rail that extends beyond each side. I will put hooks on these or maybe just use them to hang my clamps. I’m very happy with this build. There were easier plans out there to build a workbench but I’m glad I made Paul’s and it was a good learning experience! I look forward to working on more of Paul’s projects in the years to come, and now I have a place to build them. I’ve named my bench “Frankenbench”. Behold!
