Here is an oak foot stool I made last week. For some reason I found the project very inviting so I got a plank of 6/4 red oak and made one. It took a good bit longer then I thought but it was good practice. I’m still working on my sawing skills and this helped. If anyone decides to make one of these, I’d recommend trying to be as exact as possible to with the layout lines and sawing (especially the legs) as it will make the tapering process much easier and more exact.
I may finish with shellac but for now I rather like the vinegar treatment it has.Cheers

I’m in the process of making a stool or two from pine. Very fun project. With the practice on the legs, I’m thinking that Paul’s Shaker Bench might be in my future (a little further out in the future).

The stool will give you a good idea of how long the bench will take. I would suggest sawing the waste away when tapering the legs, then going to a plane (the waste provides a source of wedges too). It helped me to keep the edges (of the tapers) sharp and square as long as possible. Then it was easier to get a uniform and consistent shape when fairing to round. Spoke shaves are your friend and my # 2 and 3 planes were very helpful too.
The vinegar thing uses a chemical reaction with the tannins in the oak to create a black color. Simply put some steel wool in a small jar of distilled vinegar, let sit for a day or so, then paint on the oak. It may take a couple of coats to be real dark. Interesting finish.

Here is my stool I built a few weeks ago out of some oak I bought years ago and never new what to do with. I thought this project was a blast and I love the look of the wedged legs visible from the top.
