I made an interesting observation today. I had to work in a school’s gym and there were old and new chests (I don’t know if it’s the right word).
The old chests are dovetailed all around and the one that I photographed had even different dovetails from top to bottom. Halfblinds on top with the tails on the long side, hafblinds on the bottom with the tails on the short side and through dovetails in the middle with the tails on the long side again. Gaugemarks are nicely visible.
The new one is obviously machine-made.
I concluded that this would have been an additional income for a cabinetmaker in former times regarding the fact that every school and gym club needed several of those.
No doubt which version of the chest I like better 😉
These are great Florian. I love seeing how even utilitarian items used to be made with quality and care. I’m actually surprised to see that even the modern version is made with solid wood. Here in the states I”m sure it would be made of plywood and screws.
Thanks for posting these photos.
