Welcome! / Forums / General Woodworking Discussions / Old tool chest project
This tool chest was never officially a woodworkers tool chest. It came out of an old cotton mill here in North Carolina, but I plan on cleaning it up and using it as a woodworker’s tool chest and I thought I would share it with the community. It’s real pretty and real heavy.
I plan on just cleaning it. Any suggestions for what to clean it with? It sat in a barn for 30 plus years and has a lot of dust combined with grease on the outside.
I met a guy that restores old wooden planes and such. He said he cleans them with the GoJo type mechanics hand cleaner then applies paste wax. The hand cleaner removes all the dirt and grease, even from the pores, without destroying the patina like harsher cleaners can. The wax then protects it and gives it a nice glow. I tried on some moulding planes and the results were fantastic. Might be a good option to clean your box up while keeping it looking original.

Thanks David, that sounds like a good possibility and I’ll probably give that a try.
