Here is a Dovetail Box that I just completed. Other than the initial dimensioning of the lumber, all work was done by handtools. I resawed the boards on my bandsaw, and then planed them to thinckness in my planer. After that it was all handwork including the carving on the lid. I had the names and date inside the lid laser engraved by a friend, I didn’t trust myself to do that carving. I made this for a woman to give to her daughter as a wedding present. The wood is Padauk, and the finish was 3 coats of clear shellac and then a light coat of wax.

I am more excited about this project than just about anything else I have every made. It was challenging, but I took my time, step by step, rewatched the videos and followed Paul’s instructions. I am very happy with the way it turned out. Another great learning experience.

That’s a really lovely piece. It’s nice to think that when the wine has gone and even the vintage is a distant memory this box will still be around and being cherished.

Very nice, Steve! Love padauk. Wish it weren’t as expensive…anyway, that is truly something to be proud of. Well done.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the comments.

I have been playing around and practicing with carving for several months, but this was my first complete carving project. I was pleased with the way it turned out. The Padauk was a bit of a challenge, not that it was difficult to work with, but that it is not in the least bit forgiving. It was a valuable lesson in preparation. Watch Paul’s videos, pay attention to what he says and does, have everything prepared ahead of time, and it is a joy to work with. If your tools aren’t sharp, you are going to be disappointed and frustrated. The Padauk is a beautiful red inside, and begins to turn dark once exposed to air and eventually will turn almost black. Take your time and work it, the wood reveals itself in a very pleasing manner. I found myself lost in it for hours at a time. This wood doesn’t like to be pushed, and from what I expreienced, it doesn’t respond well to power tools either.

Steve, that’s a great looking box. What did you do for the bottom? Is it a panel suspended in grooves on the sides?

    Thanks Jason

Yes, I ploughed a groove and suspended a 1/4″ panel beveled slightly to create a snug fit and still a bit of breathing room. This left visible holes in the corners of the box, so I filled them like Paul shows in the video series. End result was the patches were almost invisible.
