I purchased a couple of the spear jackson planes based on Paul’s review. the #4 and #5 tuned up nicely and take nice shavings after minimal tweaking, but the blade would not retract far enough to take super fine shavings. after a bit of investigation i found that the chip breaker (cap iron) was too long.
i ground about a 16th of an inch (1-2mm) off the front of the chip breaker, put a new bevel on it so it sat flush on the blade, and it now retracts perfectly
just sharing my soution in case someone else has the same issue.

Barry
I have had the same problem with a Silverline plane.
I also grounded the chip breaker.
Later I further diminished the distance between the yoke slot and the chipbreaber edge by accentuating the curve with a few hammer blow.
Hi Barry, I can’t recall Paul recommending or reviewing the S&J planes you refer to. Would you be kind enough to post a link, please?
Hi Steve,
refer to Paul’s blog post around april 3, 2023
