I have my smoothing plane sharpened as Paul shows in his youtube videos with the gentle “wings” on the edges, rather than a broader camber. I generally find however, that this still leaves me with plane tracks, albeit with a small radius instead of a square stepdown. Is this normal, or does it indicate a problem with my sharpening?
Try using less downward pressure on the plane and maybe a shallower cut. Try a few strokes with almost no downward pressure. Just steady the plane and push forward. You should see a difference.
