Thanks Matthew
I tried filing the mouth slightly like you said and it has made a world of difference. It takes very nice shavings with the mouth forward. I have noticed a new problem however with moving the mouth forward, the blade will not retract all the way. I move the wheel all the way to where it will go no more and the blade is still sticking out the bottom.
30 January 2015 at 8:35 am #124092How close is the chip breaker set to the cutting edge? If it is too far you can have the problem you are describing with the iron not retracting. Set it as close as you can and see if that helps.

30 January 2015 at 8:48 am #124095Once that is set you can put a couple of layers of masking tape on the front of the mouth (through the mouth opening and stuck to the sole and inside the casting forward of the mouth opening. Then assemble the iron/chip breaker assembly to the plane, set the blade to protrude just slightly, and adjust the frog forward until the blade touches the tape evenly all the way across and tighten the frog screws. You can vary the mouth opening buy using more or less layers of tape. Once you’ve done this a couple times you won’t need the tape but it will show you what it should look like for a fine shaving. If it still jams add another piece of tape and try again.
Another thing to pay attention to with these problems is where the jam is happening. If the shaving is wedging between the iron and chip breaker it isn’t the mouth that’s causing the problem, it’s the angle on the underside of the chip breaker. Easy fix on the course diamond plate or a single cut file, just relieve the angle so the front edge touches before the heel of the bevel on the under side of the chip breaker.
30 January 2015 at 9:14 am #124096Hello Raze, have a read of this article, I found it helpful when I received my second hand plane as I had a few problems setting it up and found it confusing at first as I didn’t have a correctly set up plane to compare it to. It didn’t help as the plane came with the blade in back to front.
Setting Up and Tuning a Hand Plane
Let us know how you get on.
Edit: Ignore this post, Charles beat me to it :). Yes, it does take me that long to type a message, I am possibly the slowest typer on this forum 🙂
Glad you got your plane sorted.
Kind regards
