@thomasev That looks better Like ken says have a little tinker with settings on plane see what works best. Just make sure your iron has a flat back and polished your iron is sharp. Make sure no gaps under cap iron if there is flatten meeting edge of cap iron that meet with iron. Polish the rounded bit on cap iron.
If want fine shavings set cap iron about <1mm from courser shaving 1.5-2mm
@craig I was just having a laugh don’t mean to offend anyone.
I was taught how to put bench plane together 30 years ago by an old boy and you dare not get it wrong.
I do make plenty of mistake and I’m not Mr perfectWelcome to the club, Franco. 🙂
I’m now getting much better shavings. I’m sharpening using a guide now, which I think helped a lot. However, I’m still tinkering with getting even shavings as the middle seems to cut more than the sides. Looking more closely at the edge, I see a curve. I know Paul creates a small arch, but I’m wondering if mine is too much and that I should go for a straighter edge. (See pic.)
Also, it seems I at some point sharpened the wrong side…, which has created a second, small bevel. I assum the only remedy is to grind it flat again? (see pic)

On my No 4 I just clip the corners so they don’t dig in and leave plane tracks. If it was me I would get another blade / iron, take your time and sharpen it up, and put that one right later.
Once you have it all set up you will just love planing, it’s so addictive
You are doing a great job buddy, keep it going 😉
Thanks Ken and Thomas, that makes sense.
As to plane blade replacements for your Stanley, there are lots of sources in the US but Ken will have to address the UK places, and I obviously don’t know the resources in Norway :).
I’ve replaced the blades in three of mine with Hock blades, O-1 steel and like them a lot, but they are thicker than the normal Stanley blades. There are others from Lie-Nielsen and Lee Valley among others. I like the O-1 steel and the other specialty steels touted as superior is just marketing ( my opinion). Guess I’m just not sophisticated enough to discern the benefits 🙂Craig
Thanks, guys. 2″ wide iron. I should be able to find one.
As for stores, availability is not great in little Norway and prices are steep. The few tools I have so far I’ve bought from amazon or ebay. I have also ordered some chisels from workshopheaven which should arrive soon. If anyone can recommend other sites that offer international shipping, please do.
Ken, I see what you mean about loving planing. It was a great feeling when I finally got some clean shavings going. Love the sound! Very meditative, I think. 🙂
Thomas have you looked at these, all do international shipping
