After having recently planed some pine for the legs of my workbench build, I noticed the lovely aroma that came form it; it was a pleasure to work with.
However, I’m now planing some thin 1/4″ pine to use for the bottom of my chisel-box, and it doesn’t have the same smell. It smells vaguely of pine, but in honesty the smell is getting up my nose, and is bordering on unpleasant. At first I thought it might have been laminate, and that there may have been some glue in there, but it looks like a whole piece judging by the end-grain.
Anyone know why this would be? It might just be my imagination, but the smell was making me feel a bit sick too; are there any safety issues at play here?
Franco, there is no where else for the smell to go buddy. 🙂
Ok seriously have a read of these, not all pine will be the same.

Thanks Ken. That’s info’s helpful. I don’t think I’m having any allergy problems with it, although it’s worth bearing in mind as I do have allergies. I think mine must have been “back of the pile that no-one else wanted” pine!
I thought pine was pine…now I know different.
