Hi all has anyone used the yellow plastic vice made by record,i bought one on Ebay for £8 (£4 p+p) i,ve seen one used on a Uk woodworking show on tv, i thought it would be handy to take with me from job to job as it only fix’ with four screws ,i’d welcome any advice (no pun intended) about any retro fitting or things to do or dont do, thanks
Hi Eddy. I’ve not used one of those. I wonder if you might be better off with one of the old Stanley 700s? I believe they open to around 5 inches both on the vice itself and on the part that clamps to a table or bench. There’s usually several available on eBay. I think there was also an aluminum version that came out later (702 maybe?). I just worry somewhat about plastic.
Hello Eddy,
I was just wondering how the portable Record vise you bought is working? You mentioned taking it from job to job. I’ve often wondered how the old time joiners handled that problem. We all see many examples of antique tool chests with many different means for holding and transporting tools, but I never have seen any mention of methods used for work holding; as Paul says “our 3rd hand”.30 January 2015 at 10:47 pm #124131hi Gary i’ve not had the chance to use it yet i’m not getting much shop/shed time at the minute i’m in the process of setting up a community workshop based on the Men in sheds idea so i’m doing a lot of traveling about chasing things up and going to other sheds to see how it all works and getting a lot of advice from other shedders, role on the lighter nights so i can get in my shed when i get home, but i promise i will give my verdict on it as soon as i can .
3 February 2015 at 7:32 pm #124305My Father made a foldable work horse to saw on with a 5 inch record vice on the side that he sat at if he need to work direct and sat on the horse to plane lengthways. The vice was offset 1/3 of the length. if i can find a picture i will post it.
