I started making this fall front as a practice piece before I started making my version of Paul’s chest. I was pleased with the way it was turning out so I decided to fill it with a collection of tools I had been gathering for my wife’s son and give it to him as a graduation present.

Great work Martin. I Like this style of toolchest very much. Attention to the grain is apparent – very nice attention to detail. Wonderful Gift!

What a fantastic gift, let’s hope it inspires him to go on and produce work of the same quality!

    Hi Lucian,

Thanks for the compliment. Unfortunately there are no plans as such to point you to, instead I relied on interpreting the images in Paul’s Blog posts

    http://paulsellers.com/2012/10/progress-this-week/
    http://paulsellers.com/2012/10/a-joiner-travelling-tool-chest/

and then applying the techniques shown in the tool chest video series concentrating on episodes 1-5 and 14. The outside dimensions on my chest were 24″x 16″ x 8″ using 3/4″ materials. The rails were 3″ wide. I wanted to make a deeper chest but the 9″ wide stock I had on hand was too cupped and twisted. So I had to rip the top, bottom and sides to 6 1/2″ to deal with the cupping and then crosscut to avoid the worst of the twist. The two tills were 22 1/2″ x 6″ x 2 3/8″ (60mm).

    Thanks Martin,

Earlier this year he showed a lot of interest when we made a small keepsake box for his girlfriend. I hope the interest continues.

    Great chest Martin.
What is your opinion about the stanley spokeshave that’s in the drawer. Is it a good one?

    Hi Bert,

To be honest I have only used this style, therefore I have nothing to compare it to. I flattened the bottom of the spoke-shave, the back of the blade and sharpened per Paul’s instructions. With this preparation I have been able to shape quite a few spoons and cutting boards.

Nice job, very well done! There are plans for the design Paul uses though … just not easily found. I stumbled across this article while searching for something else awhile back.

Well done. It is surprising how many tools can be put into this style toolbox.
