I saw a Woodworking for Mere Mortals youtube video of this being made. The maker used a jig saw and random orbit sander. I used a frame saw, drill, spokeshave and a little sanding. I don’t think this took me more that 30 mins to make. Hardest part was getting my oversized ECE frame saw to make the sweeping cuts to the piece where it was clamped closely to the bench. Overall it was a fun project and nice gift to give to my parents for Thanksgiving. I hope to get my kids into the shop and make a couple more as Christmas gifts.

I think, at this size, it is designed as a tennon saw or to make long sweeping cuts. The grip is nice and big and it fits my hands well. The weight is light, but the length kind of makes it awkward. Definitely takes a bit getting used to. I would like to get a wider blade with 9-10 tpi’s and use it for cross cutting and ripping finer cuts.
I have 3 frame saws. 2 ece,s 24 and 27″ long and a custom built one that is 18″ made by CME hand tools. The larger 27″ ece frame saw, is set up with a 5 tpi blade and makes quick work for ripping long boards to width. The 24″ saw has a turning blade and the small frame saw has 9 tpi blade and is good use as a tennon saw at the bench. I also plan on removing the threaded rod and replacing it with upholstery twine.
As far as owning the saws, I like having them and plan on getting a smaller frame saw for use as a turning saw with a scroll saw blade.
I hope this helps!!
Thanks.
It helped.
I’m used to metal bow saws, for crosscutting and rip cut logs, or very large firewood/timber.So, for this kind of woodworking – unexpensive alternatives I’m thinking in ECE saws blades (from ebay or finetools) and making my own.
Shiping ebay saws from UK (as Paul advise) is more expensive.
For some curved shapes I’m thinking in something like the 12″ Gramercy kit. (By me)
At least this seems ok in my head…. let’s see what happen.
Thanks! “dborn”
