A while ago I ordered an R Groves saw from the bay, 10″. My very first vintage saw I ever bought.
When it came to me I was a bit bummed, the blade had 13 tpi but had a kink in it.
Today I picked up that saw, looked at the blade, looked at my gent’s saw, then again at the Groves. Both 10″ saws. Hmm.
Advantage of the gent’s saw, thinner plate, 20 TPI, smaller kerf.
I figured why not, I removed both saw plates from their brass backs.
Laid the saw plate of my gent’s saw over the Groves and marked the part I needed to file down to make it fit.
Then laid the Groves over the saw plate of my gent’s saw and drilled two holes. Filed flush the metal tear out and voila.
Fitted the Groves brass back, installed the handle, tensioned the blade and done.
It saws VERY nicely, the thin gent’s saw blade saws VERY easily and cleanly, I can easily feel the reduction of resistance compared to a thicker saw blade.
I was actually rather impressed by the speed and accuracy. The overall feel and balance if this saw is excellent, the ‘heavier’ folded brass backs of old are a thing of beauty.
Dead straight too. I am very happy with this saw.
The handle of those old vintage saws are so so so good in hand.
I attached a picture of cross grain cutting in pine scraps of almost 2 cm thick. Pretty much dead straight.[attachment file=”784497″]
