Hello everyone.
I am preparing for my first wood working project, a radiator cover ( an U shaped frame made of 5 cm thick pine and a laser cut plywood face panel. I have no idea what joint I should use for the u frame. I am not confident enough to cut dovetails in such thick stock so I am thinking a through tenon might be easier no to mess up.
The whole thing is going to be painted
Any suggestions on joinery and finish would me much appreciated.

10 January 2016 at 2:43 am #133763If I understand this correctly, I’m envisioning a front frame with bottom and top rail and left and right stile, housing the laser cut panel. Then there would be a similar back frame (without a panel, I guess), and the front and back frames are connected at the top with short rails/stretchers – not sure what to call them. Will there be a panel enclosed by the top members?
If my understanding is correct, then the front frame (and back frame) could be put together with a stub tenon and groove. The short tenons would not get in the way of a through tenon from the top rails. But I’m having trouble with the construction and the orientation of the grain for the through mortises.
Five cm thick seems so overly thick for something like this. Any chance you could use thinner material and use an alternate method?
10 January 2016 at 3:10 am #133767Hey CostinP – I just did a search on Lumberjocks.com for “radiator cover” and saw several projects listed. Now I think my understanding was completely wrong. Your U-shape is front and sides, not front, top and back as I had thought.

Thanks for your tips
The design is much simpler. The U frame is made of 3 boards. One top board and 2 leg boards. I am thinking of having the top board rest on the leg boards with through-tenon joints. I’ll run the groove on the inside of the U frame and the laser-cut panel will fit in this groove.
