Hi,
I’m restoring a Stanley No 5 I found in a shed. The front handle rod is bent, and attempts at straightening it have just made things worse…
Can anyone suggest where I can get a new / used one in the UK? I don’t want to buy the full handle kit as this is not a valuable plane, and the handle kit will cost probably what this plane is worth!
Thanks
Darren.
Not sure what a front handle rod is (maybe the knob bolt?), but this site: https://www.antique-used-tools.com/comparts.htm
seems to have lots of Stanley plane parts, and claims to ship internationally.
Also, ebay surely has them
Looking from the USA, ebay.uk has a front bolt and nut for £3.50 “buy it now”
But you need to find out if you need a long version or an older short version. Planes before 1910 had a shorter, fatter handle. After 1918 they were taller, and in the teens booth versions are found.
If the lever cap says Stanley, you need the tall version shown in the eBay offering.
