Hi everyone,
I was inspired by Paul’s recent hand plane restoration video to finally tackle this project that I picked up at an antique store this summer. I’ve had some trouble fully identifying it and thought I would ask for some help.
So far I’ve figured out that it is most likely a “type 6” plane based on this link: http://www.antique-used-tools.com/brtypes.htm. It has the V style trademark on the iron. That would put it at around 100 years old, and it looks like it hasn’t been used in the last 50.
The trouble I’ve had fully identifying it (and a reason I don’t think it’s extremely valuable, thus I don’t mind trying to fix it up) is that quite a bit of length has been hacked off the end, which included the #60x number that would tell me what it was originally. The overall length is now 14″. The sole is about a 16th over 2 3/4″ wide, and the mouth is 2 1/2″ wide. Also the sole is corrugated.
The knob and tote are both pretty beat up and I’m considering making replacements, and keeping the originals stored for posterity. The knob has a crack the photo doesn’t show, and part of the tote is broken off. Also a screw is missing from the front of the tote that I’ll need to replace. You can see some chisel marks where the previous user cleaned up the sharp edges. So it has some nice story to it. I bet it took a nasty fall from his workbench one day, maybe also cracking the back of the bed, leading to the shorter length. Or maybe it just didn’t fit in his toolbox.
Anyways, any advice or knowledge on this plane would be helpful. I would love to have a longer plane in my tool collection for jointing longer boards, so I’m looking forward to getting it functional again.
