I’ve been watching on ebay for one of the old Preston style router planes – and I just can’t seem to find one. I decided to make one myself. I have several beech logs that I’ve been drying in my garage and took a 2″ thick plank and made this plane – 100% with hand tools – except for using my drill press to get the blade post hole drilled perfectly perpendicular to the body. I then chiseled it out so that it is square and snug. I made the knobs out of some burly walnut scraps. I did chuck these into my drill press to shape – not too safe. The depth adjuster nut is from an old Sargent plane that I replaced the frog on. Since the threads were different I just drilled them out and re-threaded it with current threading – used a piece of threaded rod and epoxied that into place. The locking bolt is just a thumb screw and a thread insert.
The blade locks in place nicely and stays there. The depth adjuster works better than I hoped. I finished it with just a couple coats of tung oil and paste wax. I got to use it earlier this week – works perfectly. I’m very happy with it – and I think it looks cool too.
