Yes Ken has it right, re – sawing larger / thicker boards. Â Several people here in the States are building these saws for this purpose. Â That is a nice vice also I may have to make a smaller version myself for my larger hand saws.

That’s a good design. It is similar to Tage Frid’s (rather narrow) saw vise, as well as one from Jim Tolpin’s “The New Traditional Woodworker” book. The only drawback that I can think of is that it is quite low and you have to sit down or stoop when sharpening.
I made one like Shannon’s a while back, but in a 24″ length. I never applied rubber or leather to the chops, nor applied stops on the outside so it rests above my bench vise. These seem like good ideas.
