I was given a 14″ tenon saw that cuts really nice but the blade was a bit marked and rusty and the handle was broken. I have removed handle which was held on with three dome headed rivets and cleaned the blade up a bit.
I would like to fit an open type of handle similar to the one Mark Armstrong has as his signature picture. Mark is that a saw that you made the handle for.My questions are
What is the best type of wood to use,
Where in the UK could I buy small pieces of the suggested wood
How would I attach the new handle there are thee 0.150″ diameter holes in the handle with one of the holes being very near to the edgeYour help is appreciated

14 December 2013 at 10:21 pm #23888Yes David that is one of the handles I made for a 10″ saw.
once you get over 12″ pistol grip not so good . I think you need extra stability for a 14″ saw. My 14″ Sandvik I attempted a lambs tougne design not quite right and I got hang a little wrong still it’s pretty comfortable.
You need a close grained wood Maple, Beech, walnut cherry. I suppose oak is just a little course for my liking.Attachments:

This one can help, just print handle, glue it to the wood and start shaping.
This is small library of saw handles:

That very nice collection of handles to have a go at.
Thanks15 December 2013 at 8:54 am #23902Hi Mark I did wonder if an open handle was strong enough for a 14″ saw, I have got a piece of Oak and Mahogany I could use but again I did not know if that is a suitable material.
Thanks Serhly that will be a great help.I look forward to selecting one23 December 2013 at 4:52 pm #24442I have now got as far as stripping the saw down and cleaning up the blade.
I had a go at sharpening the blade, not very good. I have ordered a headband magnifier and I have made a saw sharpening vice, I need to order a new saw file and I will have another go.I have also made a mock up handle to check for comfort and correct size and have a piece of Mahogany ready for making the handle proper.
It has been a fun project, I was thinking today as I spent several hours making a throw away handle what a luxury it is doing hand woodwork as a hobby and not a job, I find it relaxing to not have any time restraints

23 December 2013 at 5:14 pm #24448David have you any carbon paper makes easy to transfer pattern to your wood.
23 December 2013 at 7:08 pm #24451Hi Mark I have glued the paper print on to both sides of my block, on the sample one I made, in places I went around the paper template with a knife removed the paper and run a pencil in to the knife cut
23 December 2013 at 8:20 pm #24453That’s going to be a very nice and special saw David. Looking forward to seeing the finished project. If the mock up is any indication, the finished saw will be very nice indeed.
23 December 2013 at 8:33 pm #24454Thanks Mark and Greg No pressure now to make a good job of the saw, still not sure of the sharpening I am hoping the headband magnifier is going to help.
The saw sharpening vice does get the teeth closer to my eyes26 February 2014 at 6:56 pm #28355Finished the handle with two coats of Danish oil and wax and fitted it to the saw. I got the new brass screws from Thomas Flinn I have sharpened the teeth and set the teeth using a punch and small but I think a new saw file would improve the results.
