I had been keeping a backsaw or two on the bench up until now. I’ve come close to doing them harm numerous times now. I don’t like hanging them by their handles, I find it awkward to retrieve them quickly. I’m trying out this shelf I made for the saws and am quite happy with it. The backboard is 3/4″ pine, 5.5″ x 22 ” . Each shelf is 1/4″ red oak 5.5″ x 5.5″. The shelves are glued onto 1 1/2″ square spruce. The spruce in
turn is screwed from the back onto the pine. The spruce blocks are 1 1/2″ apart, making it 3 1/4″ from the top of one shelf to another. The cantilevered shelves are rigid enough that the saws don’t bounce when you put them there. The shelves are wide enough that the saws don’t require any delicate balancing. The spacing between the shelves allow my XL size hands to grab a saw without much fuss, with my right hand. I suppose one could made a left handed version. 🙂 Were I to do it again, I’d probably try to use a 2 x 6 (1.5 “x 5.5″)for the back and still use the red oak, but sunk into 1” deep dados, and use a gap filling glue like epoxy if I couldn’t get really tight fits. It’s very dry, no worry about rust, so I leave the saws there. A bit of dust doesn’t frighten me. Maybe it should.Attachments:
