After following last weeks video on the tool box decided I needed a scrub plane.
Bought the attached Record no 4 off e-bay for £17 + postage with the view of converting it in to a scrub plane , it arrived this morning I was pleased that it was in very nice condition, on checking the blade it looked like it had already been ground with a radius.
Decided I would modify the to a smaller 7″ rad as recommended by Paul.Other than removing some tatty finish off the handles nothing else required. Tried it out, was pleasantly surprised how well it cuts until trying you would not believe how well they cut going across the grain
I also had a small wooden smoothing plane that I had bought for £1 from a boot sale that I re-ground the blade to a radius that also cuts great, so I now have two scrub planes.Attachments:

Which do you prefer?
I use a crappy no.5 for scrub work had for years no makers name. Works a treat.1 January 2015 at 5:04 pm #122918Hi Mark
I have not used either of them much yet but on the small trial I did the No 4 is easier to adjust but the wooden one takes less effort to push. Now that i have them I am sure I will find them very useful. If I get around to making the toolbox I could imagine swopping between the two as Paul did in the video2 January 2015 at 6:56 pm #122959A plane for every occasion. I’ve got a wooden plane on it’s way to me, £3 plus postage from Ebay which I am going to convert to a scrub plane.
I recently had to get the cup and twist out of some rough pine boards that I have and it was hard work. I used a standard No4 so i’ll be interested in the difference using a scrub plane makes, I still expect it to be hard work but hopefully quicker hard work 🙂 -
