Archie, I used 2 2×4 face glued together to make the legs, 10 2×4 face glued together to make the bench top, 2 2×6 edge glued to make the aprons. Aprons can be any boards edge glued or one wide board (2×12). The bigger the bench lengthwise it’s been suggested one uses a wider apron 15 inches or so, a bench 6 feet or longer.
Archie, is the wood 3 inch thick by 12 inch wide, I not sure what your dimensions refer to. I asked Paul a similar question a couple years ago, using 3 or 4 inch thick timbers for a bench top. He basically said it depends on the wood, how dry it is etc. my opinion is laminated tops (2×4) are going to be more dimensionally stable than a solid slab. If you use solid slabs of wood you would just have to pay attention to seasonal wood movement for a few years until it stabilizes. What’s the difference in cost would be my first question, go with the less expensive option.
